DGZfP Phased Array Subcommittee Discusses Standardization and Regulatory Developments at SONOTEC

Lead-Free Piezoceramics and the Further Development of Array Technology in Focus

The Phased Array Subcommittee of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP) convened at SONOTEC GmbH on February 19, 2026. The meeting focused on current challenges in standardization as well as potential regulatory changes with far-reaching implications for ultrasonic testing.

The session was chaired by Andreas Mück, Head of the Ultrasound Transducers Business Unit at SONOTEC and Chair of the Subcommittee. A total of 12 members and two guests participated – eight on site in Halle and six attending online. The strong participation highlights the current momentum within the field.

Standards Under Review

Against the backdrop of the scheduled revision of existing standards, the committee discussed specific proposals for improving array technology regulations. The objective is to further develop standards in a practical and application-oriented manner. The consolidated proposals will be submitted to the responsible standardization bodies.

Technological Impact of Potential EU Regulation

A key topic was the possible replacement of lead-containing piezoceramics, which are widely used in ultrasonic transducers. At present, lead-free alternatives are not yet technically equivalent for all applications. Consequently, the potential impact on established testing procedures was examined in depth. The subcommittee is closely monitoring these developments and coordinating with other European NDT societies.

Practical Applications and Professional Exchange

The ultrasonic testing of thin-walled components using phased array technology was also addressed. The discussion built upon a widely recognized technical article published in the ZfP Magazine (April 2025).

The meeting concluded with a company tour at SONOTEC, including insights into additive manufacturing.

The next meeting of the DGZfP Phased Array Subcommittee will take place on November 10, 2026, in Magdeburg.
